Amalgam (metal) Fillings
We no longer provide Amalgam, or metal fillings. Amalgam fillings generally consist of mercury, silver, tin, copper or even gold. One of the disadvantages of these fillings is that the metal can expand and contract with heat and cold, causing tooth sensitivity. The metallic color of these fillings tends to look unnatural, whereas white composite fillings are virtually undetectable. In recent years there have been some concerns about mercury leaking out of amalgam fillings during eating and drinking; however, the amount of mercury emitted is so low that it has been shown to be harmless in any studies that have been done. If you are uncomfortable with your older amalgam fillings, we can replace them with white composite fillings for more natural and modern look.
